India Moves Towards Mandatory Sex Education: Centre Assures Supreme Court of Curriculum Rollout
The central government has agreed before the Supreme Court to introduce comprehensive sex education in schools and colleges based on 26-member expert panel recommendations.
New Delhi: In a landmark development addressing a long-standing national debate, the central government has informed the Supreme Court that it has agreed to introduce "Comprehensive Sexuality Education" (CSE) across schools and higher education institutions in India.
Recommendations of the 26-Member National Panel
The initiative follows directives by the Supreme Court seeking preventive measures against statutory rape cases and adolescent unintended pregnancies. The national panel, comprising specialists from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), clinical psychologists, and ministry representatives, made several crucial recommendations:
- Integrate comprehensive sex education and child sexual abuse prevention directly into the core national school curriculum.
- Introduce basic age-appropriate concepts on bodily autonomy, safe and unsafe touch, and personal hygiene starting from primary classes.
- Appoint a dedicated trained counselor/educator in each primary school.
- Conduct mandatory 15-20 minute sessions twice a week alongside structured parent-teacher orientation programs.
